Find a sheltered spot

Choose shade and protection from heat and frost. Worms need a covered, ventilated home.

Make them comfortable

Use damp shredded cardboard or paper. Think moist sponge, never a soggy puddle.

Feed a little, then watch

Bury small portions under bedding. Let scraps break down before adding more.

What can my worms eat?

Start with vegetable scraps and small amounts of fruit. Skip meat, dairy, oils and pet waste. Avoid citrus, onion and garlic when starting out.

Will a worm farm smell?

A well-kept bin should smell earthy. Bad odours usually mean too much food or moisture. Pause feeding, add dry bedding and check airflow.

Can I put composting worms in my garden?

Red wigglers suit a worm bin’s organic bedding, rather than ordinary garden soil. Keep the worms in their farm and use the finished compost in your garden.

How do I use worm castings?

Use modest amounts as a top dressing or blend into potting mix. Castings are a soil amendment, not a complete growing medium. Follow product directions.
